Senator XXXXX,
My name is XXXXXX, and I writing today to implore you to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act 2021 (H.R. 1280).
Since the death of George Floyd, countless people have continued to perish at the hands of the police. In fact, twenty minutes after Derick Chauvin was convicted of two counts of murder and one count of manslaughter, sixteen-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant was shot dead by an officer. On that day, Rep. Cory Bush wrote a phrase that imprinted itself on the minds of many Americans: the verdict was “accountability, not justice.” The same system that convicted Chauvin allowed Bryant to die.
The George Floyd Policing Act is a first step towards not only lowering deaths at the hands of the police, but also in giving law enforcement an opportunity to reduce inequality and ultimately help heal their communities. The Act includes several proposals, aimed at holding police accountable, empowering communities, and restoring trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve:
-
Work to End Racial & Religious Profiling
-
Save Lives by Banning Chokeholds & No-Knock Warrants
-
Limit Military Equipment on American Streets & Requires Body Cameras
-
Hold Police Accountable in Court
-
Investigate Police Misconduct
-
Empower Our Communities to Reimagine Public Safety in an Equitable and Just Way
-
Change the Culture of Law Enforcement with Training to Build Integrity and Trust
-
Improve Transparency by Collecting Data on Police Misconduct and Use-of-Force
-
Stop Sexual Assault in Law Enforcement Custody
The ways in which the Act plans to meet these goals are listed in this short document: https://judiciary.house.gov/uploadedfiles/fact_sheet_for_justice_in_policing_2020.pdf
Just policing – and just policies to ensure it – are vital for the empowerment of our communities. The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act will help our country build a just society, for all of us. Our organization stands for a hope in a better society, in which we are all treated equal under the law.
Sincerely,
XXXXXXXXX
